A Mainframe Development Consultant in COBOL understands the technical landscape of IT projects, comprehends the business context and goals, and uses their experience to develop optimal solutions, including technology and design choices.
They support the project manager in planning software delivery, articulate the vision to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, and work directly with customers to define solutions.
Responsibilities: Develop and support magazine fulfillment online and batch applications written in COBOL and JCL.
Oversee activities of mid Application Developers, as applicable and provide individuals with constructive feedback as it pertains to team performance.
Participate in the design, coding, testing.
Assist clients in business/technical specification gathering when requested.
Develop detailed analysis/design documents for several enhancement projects.
Solve Online and Batch Abends.
Support the system testing and client integration testing efforts as required.
Develop Pseudo Code for the mid and junior Developers.
Qualifications Strong technical background and proficiency in IBM COBOL Strong understanding of mainframe systems with at least 5 years of experience in either Mainframe and/or Distributed applications.
Experience with JCL, CICS, and DB2.
Excellent communication skills to effectively convey technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Excellent problem-solving skills.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Strong problem-solving skills to address challenges and roadblocks that may arise during the modernization process.
Capability to mentor team members, share knowledge, and facilitate training sessions to enhance the skill set of the development team Nice to Have Relevant programming languages (Legacy languages - Assembler, PL1, Easytrieve, New IT languages - Java, Spring, Python) Cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform and Knowledge of cloud services, serverless architecture, and the ability to migrate applications to the cloud.
DevOps principles and practices, including continuous integration, continuous deployment (CI/CD), infrastructure as code , and automated testing.
