We are currently seeking an experienced professional to join our team in the role of
Senior Legal Counsel HSBC has established a Global Service Center (GSC) in Mexico as a critical element in the Bank's broader location strategy. As part of this strategic initiative, the United States (US) Legal Function will be creating a presence in the Mexico GSC. The GSC Legal team will act as an extension of onshore Legal teams based in the US by providing para-professional, operational, or administrative support around several activities.
Join this team in its early stages, and you'll have the opportunity to help design the model that we'll use and prioritize activities to transition as the team continues to grow over the next several years, expanding the scope and complexity of support provided to onshore Legal teams.
Additionally, team members will be exposed to both US and Mexican law, interact with members of the US Legal Function that manage a wide variety of financial services products, and collaborate with the senior leadership team in the Mexico GSC.
This role, Senior Legal Counsel, will lead the Mexico-based GSC Legal team, acting as both team manager and an individual contributor. The role is the primary liaison between the team and onshore Legal teams.
The role holder is responsible for the day-to-day operations and delivery of the activities assigned to a team of Paralegals and Operations Analysts that provide paralegal, operational, and administrative support to onshore Legal teams. The role holder will also be responsible for training and development of the team, with support of Bank-provided resources.
In addition to leading the team, the role holder will also provide Legal advisory support to Mexico GSC leadership. The role holder will provide expert legal advice, guidance, and support to ensure that both the legal and reputational risks faced by the Mexican entity are identified, reported, and mitigated.
The GSC Legal Team activities will continue to evolve; however, initial activities for this role will include the following:
Team Management Manage team and coordinate activity with onshore Legal teams, including current state assessment, activity migration, remediation, and new technology.Be responsible for workload management and delivery of high quality of work product which will include assignment and allocation of tasks in timely and accurate manner.Promote a strong sense of teamwork to ensure team members across focus areas and geographies work collaboratively.Be responsible for the development of the team members by coaching and holding regular one-on-ones.Identify appropriate training & development requirements for team members.Manage a diverse team with multiple deliverables and skill sets.Be responsible for communication with legal onshore team to verify work-quality and opportunities in the work done.Operate as the primary point of contact for GSC Leadership team regarding Mexico legal matters.Manage legal interaction and follow up with local panel firms on matters including, but not limited to, GSC BAU operations, services provided, contract reviews, and litigation oversight on labor matters.Successfully support change initiatives for the Legal function.Ensure risk environment is compliant with external regulatory requirements and internal control standards.Maintain HSBC Internal Control standards, including the timely implementation of internal and external audit points together with any issues raised by regulators.Support and manage key stakeholders.Be responsible for migration documentation and performance of services.Manage legal third-party vendors providing services to the GSC.What you will need to succeed in the role: (Minimum Qualification and Skills Required) Fluency in English (verbal and written)Qualified legal professional with required licenses.Prior relevant work experience within banking / financial services industry including experience in legal documentation, regulatory & compliance matters.Ability to manage and develop a team across a diverse range of processes/products.Proven ability of innovativeness and challenging the status quo.Proven experience of positive, challenging interactions with Senior Managers across functions.Advanced technical acumen, specifically MS Excel and MS Word.Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks at once.Ability to spot patterns and trends and escalate issues as needed.Exceptional judgmental skills to balance between seeking clarification and taking ownership.What additional skills will be good to have? Good grasp of Mexican laws and regulations.Foundational understanding of Global Businesses and Products and ability to identify simple and complex deal structures.Strong understanding of HSBC processes and procedures.Solid comprehension of accounting rules and general ledger reconciliations.¡You'll achieve more when you join HSBC!
