The Department of Physical Oceanography at CICESE (Ensenada, Baja California) is seeking a postdoctoral scholar to work on transport and dispersion problems in the coastal ocean. The ideal candidate is expected to hold a Ph.D. in physical oceanography or a closely related field, and have a solid understanding of coastal ocean circulation physics. While the position is based in Ensenada, the research is part of a large observational program with collaborators at numerous U.S. Institutions including the University of California Santa Barbara and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.
Understanding of the physical processes that control the transport and dispersion of material in the coastal ocean is important for the management of coastal ecosystems and pollution, including spilled oil. As part of SENER-CONACYT Hydrocarbon Fund, the aim of the project is the analysis of potential consequences of large-scale oil spills under different circulation scenarios. The project is observationally based with focus on Lagrangian observations. Surface drifter and dye experiments will be performed to observe submesoscale processes under different wind and surface wave forcing conditions. A pilot experiment will be conducted off the coast of Santa Barbara during late Fall 2015. Subsequent fieldwork will take place in 2016 and 2017 off the coast of Brownsville, TX in the Gulf of Mexico. The postdoctoral candidate is expected to participate in all aspects of the field program including preparation, data collection, and data analysis. In addition, he/she will synthesize results, formulate conclusions, and present the work at international scientific meetings and in the form of scientific publications.
Preference will be given to candidates with experience collecting and analyzing tracer data (i.e. drifters and dye). The ability to generate data analysis codes using tools such as Matlab, Fortran, and Python is required. The position requires clear communication (both orally and in writing) in the English language. The successful candidate will work fulltime at CICESE (Ensenada, Baja California). The initial appointment is for roughly 1.5 years, with the possibility of extension for 3 additional years depending on continued funding.
Interested candidates are invited to submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae with full contact information, and names and contact information of three references to Dr. Enric Pallàs Sanz (******).
