Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry. This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data, and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments, and individuals for their own use.
Role PurposeResponsible for the generation and release of successful engineering designs of enclosures for outdoor and indoor optical networks. Duties include following a product release process to develop concepts and detailed designs, deliver proofs of concept, conduct experiments, evaluate prototypes, define test plans, create design engineering documents, and define product and process specifications.
Key ResponsibilitiesConceptualize mechanical design solutions for new development and improvement projects, keeping both performance and cost targets in mind. Show deep understanding and technical evaluation behind the proposed solutions.Ensure appropriate analytical, environmental, and functional tests are done to validate functionality and cost.Lead the projects from a technical standpoint – representing the design engineering perspective – which may include delegating tasks to other technical resources like CAD design, prototyping labs, and testing & qualification laboratories.Create mechanical designs of plastic injection molded and sheet metal components to meet a set of functional requirements. For low to moderate complexity projects, act as project manager in the aspects of defining project plan, budget, schedule, team, and completing reviews and documentation from kick-off to product release.Collaborate with project team members from multiple technical disciplines located in various domestic and global locations to translate design concepts into detailed designs that meet manufacturing standards.Provide documentation to communicate findings in technical reports, protect intellectual property in patent applications, order rapid prototypes, and/or support customer presentations and demonstrations.Provide high-level and detailed 3D CAD models and 2D drawings suitable for concept presentation to customers, analytical evaluation (modeling), patent applications, technical reports or publications, cost or manufacturability analysis.Research externally published fundamentals, new designs (competitor products and patents), and manufacturing processes.Mentor junior engineers in best practices of engineering, product development, as well as Corning processes.Experiences/Education - RequiredEducation: Bachelor of Science in Engineering. Major in Mechanical preferred. Electro-Mechanics, Mechatronics or Optical will be considered.Experience: 6-8 years of Industry Related Experience (Product, Design, New Product Introduction).Experience designing injection molded and/or sheet metal parts highly desirable.Design of experiments experience is desirable.Demonstrated ability to understand and solve challenging technical problems.Demonstrated ability to take ownership and guide peers towards project goals.Sound understanding of material properties, manufacturing capabilities, and their application in product design.Strength in the ability to generate, compile, and compare concepts and apply appropriate engineering analysis to validate them.Strength in leading a cross-functional technical team towards completion of project and design goals.Ability to influence and inspire manufacturing personnel to meet project goals.Ability to collaborate successfully in a global matrixed environment.Strong verbal and written English communication skills.Ability to clearly articulate technical ideas.Ability to work unsupervised and to schedule time effectively.Ability to balance multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.Proficient in CAD software – Creo, SolidWorks, NX (Creo preferred).Proficient in the use of MS Office (Excel, Word, Project, PowerPoint).Corning Puts YOU First!
