Position Summary:
This position will have a critical role in supporting local manufacturing through evaluation of alternate materials, processes and suppliers for continuous improvement and value engineering. We are seeking an experienced and highly skilled engineer with a strong background in materials science and engineering. They will drive materials development both locally and globally, while providing direct on-site support to local manufacturing, through excellence in root cause analysis. They will be supported by a global team of experts and local team of engineers and technicians.
Key Job Responsibilities:
- Support materials and component development with detailed evaluations, analysis, reporting and communication.
- Communicate to management and internal customers on plans, risks and results, through both written and verbal channels in English and Spanish.
- Balance significant workload (support multiple projects, lead several projects). Propose priorities and readily shift activities to maximize impact.
- Develop new methodologies, equipment and capabilities to characterize and qualify materials and components, along with associated standard work.
- Conduct failure analysis as necessary factory issues, document results and propose root cause.
- Clearly articulate value of work conducted; proactively mitigate schedule risks and implement improvements.
- Assist in the development of the local team, recommending and developing training in areas of expertise.
- Maintain a safe working environment, following all procedures and PPE requirements.
- Must be self-driven and capable of conducting extensive development without frequent supervisor input.
- Must maintain an acceptable attendance, performance and discipline record.
Experience / Qualifications:
- 8-12+ years of experience in research and development and/or factory support required with HVAC or adjacent manufacturing industry experience (appliance, automotive, etc) preferred.
- Manufacturing process and materials property validation and the associated equipment (microscopy, hardness, metallurgical mounts, etc) experience strongly preferred.
- Experience with mechanical characterization and testing methods, including tensile, bending, fatigue, high temperature testing, as well as a good understanding of microstructure/ mechanical properties relationships.
- Good background in metal processing and manufacturing processes, including sheet metal forming, extrusion, drawing, casting, welding and brazing processes.
- Expertise in aluminum, copper and steel materials, processing and failure modes required. Familiarity with governing specifications (ASTM, ASME, ISO) strongly preferred.
- Experience with electromechanical systems including heat exchangers, compressors, motors and structural elements or similar systems preferred.
- Expertise in basic software operation (Microsoft office) required. Familiarity with specialty software for analysis, tracking and simulation (Minitab, JMP, Labview, Ansys/Nastran FEA, etc) would be a significant benefit.
**Education**:
BS in Materials, Chemistry, or Engineering with 8-12+ years relevant experience materials technology development, implementation to product and/or manufacturing
MS or PhD in Materials or Chemical Engineering with 4-8+ years relevant experience materials technology development, implementation to product and/or manufacturing
