This position has good knowledge of the company's underwriting requirements. This position assists the account manager on underwriting issues as well as routine procedural issues and identifying and assimilating new and revised standards. It is expected that people in this position will develop the skills, experience and knowledge to transition into the Senior Underwriter position.
- Develop and maintain working knowledge of different policy forms, coverages and FM Global's writing style and policy construction guidelines.
- Maintains an up-to-date knowledge of company underwriting standards, policy forms and coverages, and loss prevention practices.
- Effectively uses interpersonal skills. Effectively uses Planning & Organizational skills to properly prioritize workload.
- Works with Account Managers to ensure policies, binders, endorsements and other Underwriting documents are properly prepared and executed.
- Provides occasional assistance to Account Managers in handling underwriting details such as linesetting, reinsurance needs and placement, MFL studies, rating and pricing, analysis of coverages, terms and conditions, value analysis and certificates of insurance.
- Learns loss prevention and control concepts, including how to read and utilize information from Risk Reports and utilize their knowledge to assist the account manager in exposure identification and analysis.
- By working with the account manager on program structure and line setting, gains an understanding of FM Global's capacities and the use of the reinsurance placement and documentation practices (RATS).
- Assist the Account Manager in account servicing activities including preparing for internal and external meetings, presentations, proposals to begin developing account management and effective presentation skills.
- 2+ years insurance or financial industry experience with 1+ years as Underwriter I or equivalent position with FM.
- Good technical underwriting knowledge, decision making skills and knowledge of internal IS systems.
- Basic proficiency level in the competencies of Account Management, Business Communications, Exposure Analysis, Negotiations, Presentation Skills, Program Structure & Line setting and Relationships.
- Intermediate proficiency level in the competencies of Interpersonal Skills, Planning & Organizing, Policy, Terms & Conditions, Profitability Analysis & Pricing and Underwriting Guidelines.
- Excellent verbal and written communications skills in English and Spanish. Portuguese is desirable.
