**What you'll do**
- **Design resource - lead or support product improvement projects**
- Responsible for component and assembly design for manufacturing review, and approves first article inspections for design compliance.
- Conceptualizes design modifications to solve quality issues or achieve other given specifications.
- Prototype, validate, and optimize designs using rapid prototyping methods, including 3D printing
- **Corrective Action of urgent and/or chronic design quality issues**
- Investigate and resolve quality issues with materials and components.
- Investigate and resolve design quality issues causing fabrication yield issues.
- Immediate reaction / support of shop-floor issues impacting line-down situations.
- **3**rd** Party Fabrication Liaison**
- Audit fabrication of hardwood shutters and work with 3rd party fabrication suppliers to identify opportunities for improvement in design and process.
- Assist with training fabrication operators in proper assembly procedures.
- Ensure compliance at 3rd party fabrication supplier of engineering's work instructions.
- Coordinate pilot builds / testing.
- Troubleshoot / resolve design and process related issues causing fabrication issues.
- **Cost reductions**
- Identify and manage cost reduction opportunities through design, process and / or material changes.
- In close coordination with 3rd party fabrication supplier operations, drive cost reductions in scrap and labor cost, through product design improvements.
- **Product Support**
- Utilize knowledge and technical expertise to assist 3rd party fabrication personnel, Product Management, Materials Management, Customer Service, and Finance as necessary.
- Communicate technical knowledge with non-technical stakeholders so they understand important aspects of the product or design.
Create and update documentation in accordance with HDNA standards and procedures.Utilize a problem-solving approach to collect data, identify and test root causes and determine and verify improvements. Coordinates the design changes required to execute the improvement.Examine, test, and analyze mechanical components, mechanisms, and assemblies for design improvement opportunities.**Manage the redesign and coordinate the launch of product quality improvements**Conducts design reviews, produces tolerance stack-up analysis, validates data with statistical analysis, run FMEA assessment and establish design robustness for product durability.
Travel: 50% to US & Mexico
**Who you are**
**Acceptable training and experience**:Requires a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Industrial Engineering and 3-5 years of experience designing mechanical components and process improvement. Solid knowledge of wood working and wood working equipment, such as CNCs is preferred. Experience with SolidWorks modeling systems is required. Six Sigma and SolidWorks PDM experience are a plus. Must be able to speak and write in English fluently, including common engineering terminology and concepts.
**Knowledge and Experience**:
- **Solid knowledge **of injection molding with plastics and the properties of such used plastics.
- **Solid knowledge **of extrusions (both aluminum and plastic).
- **Solid Knowledge** of wood working and associated tools.
- **Solid knowledge **in the area of mechanical engineering along with mechanical dynamics and statics.
- **Solid knowledge **in the production process development and Lean Methodology.
- **Solid knowledge **of spatial reasoning in designing stand-alone components, or those working in conjunction with other components.
- **Solid knowledge **in Root Cause Analysis, including Six Sigma Tools to analyze data.
- **Solid knowledge **in computer use and software, such as Word, Excel, Project, Minitab and SolidWorks CAD system.
- **Solid knowledge **in use of metrology instruments, such as calipers, gauges, comparators, and vision systems
- **Solid Knowledge **to read and understand engineering drawings/prints, process layouts and Value-Stream Maps.
- **Skill **in developing and maintaining effective work relationships.
- **Ability **to use correct grammar and punctuation to maintain laboratory notebooks and prepare project proposals.
- **Ability **to work on projects in a self-directed manner with mínimal supervision.
- **Ability **to analyze cause and effect relationships involved with engineering design.
